North Wales Screening

Successful Film Screening Empowers Endometriosis Patients in North Wales

Following the success of our Wales Premiere in Cardiff, FTWW’s North Wales screening of the ground-breaking film Endo What? took place on the evening of Wednesday, May 25th 2016. Huge thanks go to Coleg Llandrillo, who provided the venue and refreshments free of charge to attendees – and enabled us to deliver a really informative and empowering event.

We were very pleased to have a full house on the evening, with endometriosis patients and their families; members of the Soroptomists; Llandrillo College’s head of Occupational Health; Ysbyty Glan Clwyd’s gynaecological clinical lead, and the entire team from Arrowe Park Hospital Wirral’s specialist BSGE Endometriosis Centre in attendance.

Following the screening, the floor was opened up to questions, and the Arrowe Park specialist surgeons spent at least an hour discussing symptoms, diagnosis, gold standard treatment, and referral pathways with patients.  Indeed, we were happy to hear them confirm all FTWW has been saying about current treatment strategy for this disease, ie: that diagnosis in the primary care (GP) setting continues to take an unacceptably long time, and that, ideally, regular gynaecologists should do no more than take pictures during a diagnostic laparoscopy – and then refer on to a tertiary specialist centre where excision, in a multi-disciplinary setting, can be performed.

FTWW representatives then spent some time chatting with the Arrowe Park team, and are very excited to report that they would very much like to help us to deliver our proposed GP ‘professional development’ sessions on recognising, diagnosing, and treating endometriosis. To that end, we have some important meetings coming up with representatives of the North Wales health board (Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board) to see how we might progress this provision further.

We will keep you all posted, of course so watch this space!

Thanks to North Wales Pioneer for providing coverage of the event, online and in print.
